This year marks the 50th anniversary of the CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, a milestone moment celebrating half a century of excellence in women’s college basketball.
Opening day featured intense matchups, defensive battles, and standout performances as teams fought to advance in the tournament. Here’s how the action unfolded:
Bowie State (18-11) Defeats Winston-Salem State (7-20), 64-54
Winston-Salem State came out firing, putting up 25 points in the first quarter, but Bowie State weathered the storm, tightening up defensively and taking control in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored the Rams 20-13 in the third quarter and finished strong in the fourth to secure the win.
Bluefield State (11-18) Pulls Away from Johnson C. Smith (7-19), 74-59
Johnson C. Smith kept the game competitive early, but Bluefield State’s fast-paced attack proved too much. The Big Blue took command in the second half, using rebounding dominance and transition baskets to pull away for the 15-point victory.
Lincoln (PA) (12-17) Holds Off Shaw (10-18), 54-49
A defensive battle from start to finish, Lincoln (PA) made clutch free throws and key stops in the fourth quarter to hold off Shaw’s comeback attempt. Both teams played with intensity, but Lincoln’s late-game execution sealed the win.
Claflin (15-10) Clamps Down on Elizabeth City State (8-17), 50-39
Defense was the story in this matchup as Claflin smothered Elizabeth City State, holding them to just 39 total points. Claflin controlled the paint and forced tough shots all night, setting the tone for a strong tournament push.
