Coppin State Extends Winning Streak as Howard and Delaware State Make Moves in MEAC Volleyball

Coppin State kept its winning streak rolling, Howard picked up two conference victories, and Delaware State bounced back with a sweep during a busy week of MEAC volleyball ending October 4.

The Eagles remained unbeaten in conference play after sweeping South Carolina State on Friday and defeating North Carolina Central in four sets Sunday. Coppin State’s winning streak reached 12 matches, the fourth-longest active streak in NCAA Division I at the end of the week, behind Nebraska, Pittsburgh and College of Charleston.

Coco Figueroa also reached a career milestone, passing 1,500 digs during Friday’s victory over South Carolina State.

Howard found its rhythm with a pair of important wins. The Bison earned their first home victory of the season Thursday, beating Delaware State in four sets. Howard followed that performance with a five-set road victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday.

Delaware State responded to its loss at Howard by sweeping Norfolk State on Sunday. Emma Patmon led the Hornets with a match-high 13 kills, helping Delaware State finish the week with a conference road win.

Norfolk State had already collected two victories before facing the Hornets. The Spartans defeated Hampton in four sets Wednesday, then rallied past Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday.

After losing a lengthy opening set, 32 to 30, Norfolk State won the next three in front of 298 fans at Gill Gymnasium. Gabrielle Gilbert delivered 21 kills, 12 digs and four service aces while hitting .400. The victory was the Spartans’ first over the Hawks since November 1, 2024.

North Carolina Central and Morgan State also delivered one of the week’s closest contests. NCCU edged the Bears in five sets Friday at McDougald-McLendon Arena in the MEAC Volleyball Match of the Week.

Morgan State recovered Sunday, defeating South Carolina State in another five-set battle to close its weekend with a road victory.
