In Bowie, Md., the moment the final out sealed their victory over Claflin University, junior centerfielder Jayla Hill of Bowie State recalled the electrifying realization that her team had achieved their season-long aspiration: clinching the CIAA conference tournament title for the second consecutive year.

With their win against the Panthers (19-23), the Bulldogs secured their fifth appearance in the NCAA Division II regional tournament. Yet, Coach Ed Powell emphasized that their sights are set on more than just participation; they aim to extend their season and make history as the first HBCU softball team to seize a regional title. They kick off their tournament campaign against East Stroudsburg University on May 9 at 11 a.m. at Creekview Park, fueled by the momentum of their conference victory.

Hill, named tournament MVP for her stellar performance, reflected on the jubilant scene of teammates flooding the field after the final out. Her impressive stats, including seven hits, three runs, and eight RBIs, propelled the Bulldogs through their flawless 4-0 run to claim the championship.

Bowie State faced an early setback in their second game against Claflin, trailing 1-0 in the first inning. However, they quickly turned the tide, scoring two runs, including a crucial RBI double from freshman centerfielder Presleigh Braxton, to seize the lead. Despite Claflin’s resilient response with three more runs, the Bulldogs leveled the score at 6-6 in the fourth inning, sparking a thrilling back-and-forth battle.

With Claflin briefly reclaiming the lead, the Bulldogs staged a remarkable comeback in the sixth inning, rallying for six runs to establish an 11-8 lead that they fiercely defended till the end.

Junior catcher Ellie Henneberg echoed the sheer joy of their victory, describing the ecstatic celebrations among teammates as they clinched the win.

Looking ahead to the regional competition, Coach Powell emphasized the importance of maintaining their winning formula: getting runners on base, applying pressure on the base paths, and delivering consistent performance. He sees an unprecedented opportunity for his team to make history and is determined to seize it.

FAMU Rattlers Secure Thrilling 24-23 Victory Over Norfolk State in 2024 MEAC/SWAC Challenge

HBCU ORIGINAL

Published

on

The 2024 MEAC/SWAC Challenge was nothing short of electrifying, with the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers narrowly edging out Norfolk State in a 24-23 victory. This win in Atlanta not only kicks off FAMU’s season with a bang but also cements their status as a force to be reckoned with in HBCU football.

A Historic Achievement in Atlanta

FAMU’s victory in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge is a historic one. The Rattlers became the first team to close one season with a Celebration Bowl victory and begin the next with a win in the Challenge. The 24-23 win over Norfolk State marks their second consecutive victory in Atlanta, and it’s clear that the Rattlers are setting the tone for what could be another championship-worthy season.

A Game of Two Halves

The game was a tale of two halves. FAMU found themselves trailing 14-10 at halftime, with Norfolk State’s running game causing significant problems. The Spartans racked up 191 rushing yards in the first half, putting the Rattlers on their heels. But FAMU’s defense made crucial adjustments during the break, allowing only 36 rushing yards in the second half. This defensive turnaround was the key to the Rattlers’ comeback.

Offensive Spark Ignited

With the defense stepping up, FAMU’s offense found its rhythm. Quarterback Daniel Richardson, making his first start for the Rattlers, connected with wide receiver Jamari Gassett for two pivotal second-half touchdowns. Gassett’s playmaking ability and Richardson’s poise under pressure proved to be the difference in the game, as FAMU edged ahead of Norfolk State.

This victory also marks a successful debut for new FAMU head coach James Colzie III. Securing his first win in such a high-stakes game bodes well for the season ahead, as Colzie looks to build on the legacy of success at FAMU.

SWAC’s Momentum Continues

With FAMU’s win, the SWAC conference continues to gain ground in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge series, reducing the MEAC’s overall lead to 11-7. The SWAC has now won the last three games in this series, underscoring the growing competitiveness and talent within the conference.

Interestingly, FAMU’s win is their second in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, but their first as a member of the SWAC. Their previous victory came in 2013 when they were still part of the MEAC, adding another layer of intrigue to this storied rivalry.

Looking Ahead: Future MEAC/SWAC Challenges

The excitement from this year’s MEAC/SWAC Challenge sets the stage for what promises to be thrilling matchups in the years to come. The 2025 game will see North Carolina Central take on Southern, followed by Alabama A&M facing Howard in 2026, and South Carolina State going head-to-head with Alabama State in 2027. Each of these games will continue the tradition of showcasing the best in HBCU football, with pride and bragging rights on the line.

Final Thoughts

FAMU’s 24-23 victory over Norfolk State in the 2024 MEAC/SWAC Challenge was a testament to resilience, strategy, and sheer willpower. The Rattlers’ ability to make crucial adjustments and execute in the clutch highlights why they are one of the premier programs in HBCU football. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on FAMU to see if they can carry this momentum forward and once again find themselves in the Celebration Bowl at season’s end.

Go Rattlers! 🐍

Delaware State Hornets vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors: Week 1 College Football Preview

HBCU ORIGINAL

Published

on

This Saturday, college football fans are in for an exciting Week 1 matchup as the Delaware State Hornets take on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, Hawaii. The game kicks off at 11:59 p.m. ET and marks the start of a new season for both teams with plenty to prove.

Delaware State University head coach Lee Hull with some of his Hornets at Tuesday’s media day. GARY EMEIGH/SPECIAL TO THE DELAWARE STATE NEWS

Delaware State Hornets: Aiming for Redemption

The Delaware State Hornets are looking to turn things around after a challenging 2023 season that saw them finish with a disappointing 1-10 record. The Hornets struggled in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), where they went winless in five conference games. The program has not had a winning season since 2012, when they finished 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the MEAC.

The Hornets’ offense, which averaged just 18 points per game last year, will need to improve significantly if they hope to compete against a strong Hawaii team. New head coach Lee Hull, who took the reins at Delaware State, has been hard at work during the preseason, focusing on revitalizing both sides of the ball. The Hornets will be eager to make a statement on Saturday and set the tone for the rest of the season.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors: Building on Past Success

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, on the other hand, are coming off a 5-8 season in 2023, where they finished eighth in the Mountain West Conference with a 3-5 conference record. The Rainbow Warriors have been a formidable force against FCS opponents, boasting a 20-game winning streak in such matchups.

Quarterback Brayden Schager led the Mountain West in passing yards (3,542) and touchdowns (26) last season and will be a key player to watch in this game. Schager’s experience and skill make the Rainbow Warriors a tough opponent for the Hornets. Hawaii is eager to return to the form they showed in 2020 when they finished with a winning record and earned a bowl game appearance.

What to Expect in This Matchup

With the Rainbow Warriors listed as 39.5-point favorites, the odds are certainly stacked against Delaware State. However, the start of a new season brings with it a sense of hope and unpredictability. The Hornets, under new leadership, will look to defy the odds and put up a strong fight against a Hawaii team that has shown consistency in these types of matchups.

How to Watch

Fans of both teams can catch the action live. For local audiences in Hawaii, the game will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports pay-per-view. Fans outside of Hawaii can stream the game via the Team1 Sports app by searching for “Hawaii football” in the channels tab.

As the Delaware State Hornets and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors prepare to clash in this Week 1 showdown, both teams have a lot on the line. Whether it’s Hawaii looking to maintain their dominance over FCS teams or Delaware State striving for a fresh start under new leadership, this game promises to be an intriguing start to the college football season.

Tennessee State University (TSU) is set to make history as the first historically Black college and university (HBCU) to introduce an ice hockey program. This landmark initiative, announced in June 2023, marks a significant expansion in TSU’s athletic offerings and underscores the university’s commitment to broadening opportunities for its students.

A Historic First for HBCUs

TSU’s decision to add ice hockey to its sports roster is a bold and pioneering move in the realm of collegiate athletics. The program, set to launch in 2024, will begin as a men’s club team with aspirations to evolve into a Division I program that includes both men’s and women’s teams. Leadership and Vision

The appointment of Duanté Abercrombie as the head coach of the TSU men’s hockey team is a testament to the university’s dedication to excellence and diversity. Abercrombie brings a wealth of experience from his tenure with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs organization, where he played a key role in player development and coaching. His background and involvement in various NHL BIPOC initiatives align with TSU’s mission to break barriers and promote inclusivity in sports (Tennessee State University) (NHL).

“I am incredibly excited to embark on building this program, supported by God, my family, TSU students, alumni, and all those eagerly awaiting this moment,” said Abercrombie. “I firmly believe that one day, TSU will be recognized not only as a powerhouse on the ice but also as a program whose student-athletes leave a profound legacy on the world” (Tennessee State University).

Collaboration and Support

TSU’s hockey program is a collaborative effort involving key partnerships with the NHL, the NHLPA, and the Nashville Predators. These partnerships are crucial in providing the necessary resources and support to ensure the program’s success. The Nashville Predators, in particular, have been instrumental in fostering the growth of hockey in Tennessee and are enthusiastic supporters of TSU’s new initiative.

“We are thrilled whenever we have a chance to add any hockey program at the collegiate level, but to be able to announce the addition of club hockey at Tennessee State University is truly special,” said Kevin Westgarth, NHL Vice President of Hockey Development & Strategic Collaboration (NHL).

Expanding Opportunities

TSU’s introduction of ice hockey is part of a broader trend among HBCUs to diversify their athletic programs by incorporating non-traditional sports. This move follows similar initiatives by other HBCUs, such as Fisk University’s women’s gymnastics team and Hampton University’s men’s lacrosse team. These programs aim to provide students with unique opportunities and to foster greater diversity in sports traditionally dominated by non-minority athletes (HBCU Buzz).

A New Chapter for TSU

As TSU embarks on this historic journey, the university community and supporters are optimistic about the future. The hockey program represents not only a new athletic opportunity but also a chance to inspire a new generation of athletes and fans. With strong leadership, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to excellence, TSU’s hockey team is poised to make a significant impact on and off the ice.

In the words of TSU President Glenda Glover, “Bringing ice hockey to Tennessee State University is a part of our continued commitment to provide our students with new opportunities and to broaden new interests in areas where they have traditionally had limited or no access” (HBCU Buzz).

TSU’s groundbreaking hockey program is more than just a new sport—it’s a milestone in the university’s storied history and a beacon of progress and inclusivity in collegiate athletics.
