Thurgood Marshall College Fund Awarded $25 Million Grant for HBCU Capacity Building
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has secured a transformative $25 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to enhance the capacity of both the organization and its member institutions, which include historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
This significant funding will support Project HBCU Capacity Building: Maximizing HBCU Performance Through Investments in Research, Operations, and Innovation. Through this initiative, TMCF aims to address pressing infrastructure challenges and foster innovation within HBCUs. By prioritizing student support and enabling institutions to tackle underfunded initiatives, the project seeks to drive operational excellence and bolster institutional capabilities.
“This extraordinary grant allows us to better serve our campuses and students, opening doors for innovative solutions to unique challenges,” said Dr. Harry L. Williams, president and CEO of TMCF. “We are grateful to Lilly Endowment for their trust in our mission and vision.”
Racquel Oden, chair of the TMCF Board of Directors and HSBC Head of Wealth, Premier & Global Private Banking, US, emphasized the grant’s transformative potential. “This funding empowers us to advance our mission and make a lasting impact on our students and campuses. We deeply appreciate Lilly Endowment’s confidence in our efforts.”
Key Strategies for Project HBCU Capacity Building
The initiative will focus on three core areas:
- Improving Administrative Systems: TMCF plans to implement a data management system to streamline data collection and information sharing while offering professional development opportunities like project management and process improvement for staff.
- Fostering Collaborative Learning: Member institutions will form cohorts to share best practices and resources, with programs aimed at improving enrollment, student services, and community engagement.
- Providing Targeted Grants: Select member institutions will have access to competitive grant opportunities and technical support. These grants aim to strengthen research and faculty development, improve retention and graduation rates, enhance workforce readiness, and modernize technology systems for enrollment and financial aid.
Ted Maple, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for education, highlighted TMCF’s critical role in advancing HBCU success. “TMCF provides exceptional support to its member institutions, helping students achieve their educational and career goals. We are pleased to support these efforts.”
Over the next five years, TMCF anticipates significant advancements in institutional performance, benefiting not only participating HBCUs but the broader HBCU community through collaborative learning and shared growth.

At just 17 years old, Kamora Freeland has made history as one of the youngest African American female pilots in the United States — and she’s now a proud Spelman College student.
Kamora’s journey began at 15 when she received a scholarship from the United Youth Aviators program. Balancing her academic commitments as a dual-enrolled student at Kingsborough Early College Secondary School and Kingsborough Community College, Kamora’s determination led her to earn her private pilot’s license before even obtaining her driver’s license.
In February 2024, Kamora became the youngest African American female licensed pilot in New York State, a milestone that drew attention from major media outlets like ABC7 New York.
Now thriving at Spelman College as a Presidential Scholar, Kamora is majoring in International Relations with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Her goal is to become a commercial airline pilot and eventually open her own aviation school to inspire and empower young women of color to pursue careers in aviation.
Kamora Freeland’s remarkable achievements embody the spirit of HBCU excellence, showcasing the power of perseverance and the importance of creating pathways for future generations.

The world mourns the tragic loss of Angie Stone, a Grammy-nominated neo-soul legend, who passed away at the age of 63 following a devastating car crash. Stone’s impact on music, culture, and the HBCU community is undeniable, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
A Voice That Defined a Generation
Born Angela Laverne Brown in Columbia, South Carolina, Angie Stone’s musical journey began in the church, where she cultivated the rich, soulful voice that would later captivate the world. She first gained prominence as a member of The Sequence, one of hip-hop’s first female rap groups, whose hit song Funk You Up laid the groundwork for future women in hip-hop.
Stone’s transition to R&B and neo-soul cemented her status as an icon. With albums like Black Diamond and Mahogany Soul, she delivered timeless hits such as No More Rain (In This Cloud), Wish I Didn’t Miss You, and Brotha, which resonated deeply with fans of soul music. Her sound, blending gospel roots with smooth R&B, brought warmth and authenticity to the industry.
A Champion for Black Culture and HBCUs
Beyond her music, Stone was a proud advocate for Black culture and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She was scheduled to perform at the CIAA Championship halftime show, reinforcing her connection to HBCU traditions and celebrations. Additionally, as a devoted member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., she continuously uplifted her community through service and empowerment.
The Tragic Loss
On March 2, 2024, Stone’s journey was tragically cut short in a car accident while traveling in a van to Atlanta after a performance. The vehicle reportedly flipped over and was struck by a big rig, claiming her life on the scene. While eight other passengers survived, her sudden passing has left a void in the world of music and culture.
A Legacy That Lives On
Angie Stone’s impact extends beyond her chart-topping hits. She was a trailblazer, actress, songwriter, and mentor, influencing artists like Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. Her voice carried messages of love, empowerment, and resilience—messages that will continue to inspire.
The world may have lost Angie Stone, but her music and spirit remain eternal. We honor her contributions, her influence on Black music, and the indelible mark she left on the world. Rest in power, Queen.

Baltimore, MD – The CIAA Fan Fest 2025 is officially underway, and Day One did not disappoint! Held at the Baltimore Convention Center, this two-day FREE event (February 28 – March 1) is one of the biggest highlights of CIAA Tournament Week, bringing together thousands of HBCU fans, alumni, students, and families for an action-packed celebration of culture, music, and sports.
A Celebration of HBCU Culture and Community
From the moment doors opened, fans were greeted with high-energy sponsor activations, interactive games, and a festival-like atmosphere filled with HBCU pride. Vendors lined the convention center, offering everything from exclusive CIAA merchandise to food, giveaways, and community resources.
Vendors Had It All – Bling, Hats & Freebies!
Shoppers had no shortage of options as vendors showcased a wide variety of unique products and must-have collectibles. From blinged-out accessories to personalized hats, there was truly something for everyone. Fans also walked away with tons of free giveaways, filling their official CIAA bags with goodies from different sponsors, making sure no one left empty-handed!
Interactive Games & Activities for All Ages
One of the most exciting aspects of the CIAA Fan Fest was the variety of interactive games and activities available for fans. Attendees of all ages got a chance to show off their basketball skills, participating in free throw contests, three-point shootouts, and other fun basketball challenges.
For those looking for an adrenaline rush, the inflatable climbing wall was a huge hit, testing fans’ strength and agility as they raced to the top. Meanwhile, others laced up their skates and hit the roller skating rink, bringing back nostalgic fun while grooving to the hottest HBCU-inspired beats.
Adding even more energy to the event, cheerleaders from various CIAA schools delivered jaw-dropping performances, bringing spirit, flips, and high-flying stunts that had the crowd hyped!
The Battle of the Bands Brought the House Down! 🎺🥁
One of the most highly anticipated events of the day was the Battle of the Bands, where some of the best HBCU marching bands faced off in an epic musical showdown! Each band brought its A-game, delivering booming drumlines, powerful brass sections, and intricate formations that had the entire venue rocking. Fans waved their hands, danced in the aisles, and cheered on their favorite schools as the bands competed for bragging rights. The energy was unmatched, proving once again that HBCU bands are the heartbeat of the culture!
Star-Studded Performances Light Up the Stage
The highlight of Day One was undoubtedly the live concert performances, headlined by R&B superstar Lloyd, who had the crowd on their feet with his chart-topping hits like “You”, “Get It Shawty”, and “Lay It Down”. Fans sang along, danced, and created an electric atmosphere that truly embodied the spirit of CIAA Fan Fest.
In addition to Lloyd, the stage was packed with DJ sets, local artists, and marching band performances, bringing non-stop entertainment throughout the day. The energy was infectious as HBCU Original was LIVE on the scene, capturing all the best moments.

If Day One is any indication, Day Two of CIAA Fan Fest 2025 will be just as epic! Expect even more live performances, giveaways, and interactive experiences leading up to the highly anticipated CIAA Basketball Championship games.

HBCU Original was on the ground live at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland, as the CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament tipped off in historic fashion. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, a milestone moment celebrating half a century of excellence in women’s college basketball.
Opening day featured intense matchups, defensive battles, and standout performances as teams fought to advance in the tournament. Here’s how the action unfolded:
Bowie State (18-11) Defeats Winston-Salem State (7-20), 64-54
Winston-Salem State came out firing, putting up 25 points in the first quarter, but Bowie State weathered the storm, tightening up defensively and taking control in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored the Rams 20-13 in the third quarter and finished strong in the fourth to secure the win.
Bluefield State (11-18) Pulls Away from Johnson C. Smith (7-19), 74-59
Johnson C. Smith kept the game competitive early, but Bluefield State’s fast-paced attack proved too much. The Big Blue took command in the second half, using rebounding dominance and transition baskets to pull away for the 15-point victory.
Lincoln (PA) (12-17) Holds Off Shaw (10-18), 54-49
A defensive battle from start to finish, Lincoln (PA) made clutch free throws and key stops in the fourth quarter to hold off Shaw’s comeback attempt. Both teams played with intensity, but Lincoln’s late-game execution sealed the win.
Claflin (15-10) Clamps Down on Elizabeth City State (8-17), 50-39
Defense was the story in this matchup as Claflin smothered Elizabeth City State, holding them to just 39 total points. Claflin controlled the paint and forced tough shots all night, setting the tone for a strong tournament push.
